Title: Research-Thesis: Who Falls For The Nudge? The Effect Of Scarcity And Social Proof As Dark Pattern Examples On Purchase Intention
Abstract: This thesis investigates the effects of scarcity and social proof as dark pattern nudges on purchase intention within an online flight booking context. It further examines whether perceived urgency and fear of missing out (FOMO) mediate these effects and whether susceptibility to interpersonal influence and manipulation literacy moderate consumer responses. Using a 2x2 experimental design (N = 225) with realistic booking scenarios for mediation and moderation analyses, the study extends previous research by examining psychological and contextual drivers of nudged decision-making. The findings suggest that the impact of dark patterns is context-dependent and may be overridden in habitual, price-driven booking decisions.

Abstract: This master’s thesis analyzes the role of the statutory auditor vis-à-vis the Belgian Works Council in light of the new standard issued by the Institute of Registered Auditors on 14 May 2024. This reform marks an evolution in the regulatory framework governing the auditor’s intervention within the Works Council, notably by strengthening the pedagogical dimension of the auditor’s mission and explicitly recognizing their contribution to social dialogue.
The research is anchored in the Belgian socio-economic model, in which the Works Council plays a central role as an institutionalized body for information, consultation, and dialogue between employers and employee representatives. Reliable and comprehensible economic and financial information is essential for ensuring meaningful social dialogue, and the auditor acts as an independent third party responsible for certifying such information and explaining it to stakeholders.
The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical and legal framework, tracing the historical development of the Works Council, outlining its objectives and competencies, and examining the evolution of the auditor’s role before and after the 2024 reform. Particular attention is given to the objectives of the new standard, which aims to improve the quality, completeness, and clarity of information transmitted to the Works Council while reinforcing the auditor’s pedagogical responsibility.
The second part adopts an empirical approach based on semi-structured interviews conducted with auditors, employers, and employee representatives. The analysis focuses on the perception of the auditor’s role, the practical implications of the new standard, and its impact on the dynamics of social dialogue.
The findings indicate that the reform is generally perceived as a positive development, enhancing transparency, mutual trust, and understanding within the Works Council. However, it also increases the formalization and workload associated with the auditor’s mission. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the evolving role of the auditor as a key actor in social dialogue under the new regulatory framework.

The menstrual product multiple: A material-semiotic analysis of Belgian public action against menstrual poverty

Title: The menstrual product multiple: A material-semiotic analysis of Belgian public action against menstrual poverty
Abstract: This master thesis addresses the ambivalence surrounding menstrual products and revealed by Critical menstruation studies. Even though the field has welcomed the increasing public attention received by menstruation this last decade, scholars have criticised current menstrual policies against menstrual poverty for their focus on the provision of menstrual products. They argued that menstrual products are negatively affecting menstruating people because they reinforce the menstrual stigma and that menstrual policies use them as mere ‘technological fixes’, neglecting the social dynamics surrounding menstruation.
To address this ambivalence, this thesis adopts a novel approach to menstrual policies, by drawing on material-semiotics to examine the way menstrual products are enacted in Belgian public action led against menstrual poverty during the term of office 2019-2024. In addition to the analysis of the framing of menstrual products by Belgian public action, this thesis looks at the sociotechnical assemblages of three initiatives distributing menstrual products. Following material-semiotics, it shows that ‘the menstrual product’ enacted by Belgian public action is multiple. Four ‘versions’ of ‘the menstrual product’ are identified: the dignity object, the health transmitter, the awareness tool and the transitionary tool. Such results partially challenge Critical menstruation studies’ critique of the provision of menstrual products as ‘technological fixes’. On the one hand, the analysis reveals that menstrual products address the social dynamics surrounding menstruation as they produce effects beyond the collection of menstrual blood. On the other hand, the analysis stresses how those effects result from their sociotechnical settings, and not from their material characteristics.
