Abstract
[en] The need for production of large amount of cells in the treatment of challenging diseases such as cancer brought up the idea of expanding and proliferating anchorage-dependent cells on microbeads, called microcarriers. The development of new microcarriers to improve cell adhesion as well as process automation has been intensively studied for production of biologics and vaccines. However, cell-based therapies require the recovering of the cells after expansion and proliferation on microcarriers. Hence, the development of microcarriers allowing control cell adhesion and proliferation, as well as cell detachment without damaging the cells is currently a clear objective. Herein, we have successfully developed a technique consisting of functionalizing commercially available microcarriers in order to improve cell interaction while maintaining their bulk properties optimized for large-scale production.
