Abstract

[en] A new biomass carbonization process invented by Jean-Paul Vieslet and developed within BioCarbon Industries is likely to meet industrial and environmental issues to produce a viable alternative to traditional and very polluting coal. The process consists of a step of drying the matter followed by a thermochemical reaction where the biomass is converted into three fractions of products : a solid biochar, a liquid phase and a non-condensable gas phase. The mass and energy exchanges of this new process are studied in this work. To do so, experimental tests were identified and analyzed to deduce the different exchanges as well as the impact of certain parameters on the final results. Based on these experimental observations, a theoretical model is developed to predict the different mass and energy balances. The solid yield from the carbonization reaction is very promising because it reaches on average 38%.The drying step of the biomass can be completely fed from an energy point of view by using one of the by-products of the reaction as fuel. The heat emissions released by the exothermic reaction are greater than the needs of the process, which makes the latter very interesting because it could be made self-sufficient.
