Rehabilitation following cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs : a physiotherapeutic approach with a specific focus on hydrotherapy

Abstract

Objectif du travail : L’objectif de ce travail est, tout d’abord, de présenter et de mettre en évidence l’importance des différentes modalités de physiothérapie décrites dans la littérature scientifique dans le cadre de la rééducation post-opératoire d’une rupture du ligament croisé crânial chez le chien, en mettant un accent particulier sur l’hydrothérapie. Ensuite, il s’agira de comparer ces approches, à travers l’analyse de cas cliniques, aux protocoles de physiothérapie généralement pratiqués au sein du service de médecine vétérinaire des animaux de compagnie de la faculté de Liège Résumé La rupture du ligament croisé crânial (RLCC) est une pathologie orthopédique très fréquente chez le chien entrainant une un instabilité de l’articulation du membre atteint. Bien que le traitement conservatif existe, le traitement de choix est une approche chirurgicale visant à rétablir la stabilité de l’articulation. L’intérêt grandissant pour la physiothérapie chez nos animaux de compagnie nous pousse à considérer l’utilisation de la physiothérapie comme outil principal dans la rééducation de la RLCC chez le chien afin d’améliorer la qualité de vie de nos animaux le plus rapidement possible. Ce travail propose donc un programme de physiothérapie post-opératoire chez le chien à la suite d’une RLCC, en présentant des modalités thérapeutiques adaptées à chaque phase du processus de rééducation. Pour cela, il est important d’utiliser des outils de mesures afin de pouvoir objectiver des critères cliniques précis. Les cas cliniques présentés ensuite illustrent l’application concrète des modalités de physiothérapie décrites dans la littérature, permettant ainsi une comparaison entre les recommandations théoriques et leur mise en œuvre en pratique clinique.

Aim of the work The aim of this work is, first, to present and highlight the importance of the various physiotherapy modalities described in the scientific literature in the context of post-operative rehabilitation following cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) in dogs, with a particular focus on hydrotherapy. Secondly, these modalities will be compared through the analysis of clinical cases with the physiotherapy protocols commonly applied within the companion animal department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Liège. Summary Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is one of the most common orthopedic conditions in dogs, leading to instability of the affected limb's joint. While conservative management is possible, the treatment of choice remains surgical intervention to restore joint stability. The growing interest in physiotherapy for companion animals encourages the use of this discipline as a key component of the rehabilitation process following CCLR, with the goal of improving the animal’s quality of life as efficiently as possible. This work proposes a structured post-operative physiotherapy program for dogs following CCLR, presenting therapeutic modalities adapted to each phase of the rehabilitation process. The use of objective measurement tools is also important, to monitor and quantify clinical outcomes. Finally, clinical case studies illustrate the practical application of the physiotherapy techniques described in the literature, enabling a comparison between theoretical recommendations and their real-life implementation in the clinical setting
