Abstract
[en] Context : In the framework of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), quality of care has become a major issue, particularly in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Cameroon, engaged in a reform of its health system, is facing structural and institutional challenges that hinder the implementation of accreditation mechanisms.
Objective : This thesis aims to carry out, using an experimental tool developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the inventory of accreditation mechanisms in Cameroon. This is to guide WHO support policies in the particular context of LMICs.
Methodology : We conducted a qualitative in-depth case study, based on semi-structured interviews with twelve key institutional actors of the Cameroonian health system, as well as a documentary analysis. The inductive thematic approach allowed us to explore perceptions, practices and obstacles related to accreditation.
Results : The study reveals the absence of a formal national accreditation policy, fragmented governance, a weak organizational culture of quality, and a mismatch between international standards and local realities. The WHO tool, although relevant, requires a contextual adaptation to be fully operational.
Conclusion : Accreditation is a strategic lever to improve the quality of care in Cameroon. Its implementation requires strong political will, strengthened institutional coordination, and contextualization of evaluation tools. This work contributes to shed light on the conditions necessary for an effective and sustainable reform of the Cameroonian health system.
