Abstract

Introduction : Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) is an underestimated public health issue, with potentially long-lasting physical, cognitive, and psychological consequences. In planned cardiac surgery, admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is predictable, yet patient preparation remains limited, which can heighten anxiety. The InfoPréSI study assesses whether a pre-admission interview, combined with an informational brochure, can reduce perceived suffering and psychological sequelae related to PICS.

Materials and Methods : This was a prospective, interventional, comparative, single-center study conducted at the University Hospital of Liège involving 64 adult patients scheduled for major cardiac surgery. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: control (usual information) and intervention (usual information plus a structured interview with an ICU follow-up nurse coordinator, along with a brochure describing the ICU stay). Assessments (ExPRIM, HADS, IES-R) were carried out within five days after ICU discharge and at one month.

Results : Groups were comparable in baseline and clinical characteristics. No statistically significant differences were observed for HADS, ExPRIM, or IES-R scores. However, a trend toward lower IES-R scores was noted in the intervention group, suggesting a potential effect in reducing post-traumatic stress symptoms. The intervention was deemed feasible, well accepted, and without adverse effects.

Conclusion : The pre-admission interview combined with an informational brochure did not show a significant effect on post-ICU psychological outcomes in this limited sample, but the observed trend supports further research on a larger scale. Simple, low-cost, and easily integrated into routine care, this educational approach could help humanize ICU management and reduce the emotional impact of an ICU stay.
