L'importance de l'olfaction canine : fondements biologiques, rôle comportemental et enjeux pour le chien de compagnie

Abstract

L'odorat est le sens prédominant chez le chien domestique (Canis lupus familiaris). Ses fondements anatomiques et physiologiques lui confèrent une sensibilité largement supérieure à celle de l’homme. Ce sens joue un rôle dans la communication intraspécifique et interspécifique et sous-tend certains processus cognitifs. Cependant, l'importance de ce sens est souvent négligée dans la vie quotidienne des chiens de compagnie. Sa prise en compte constitue un levier important pour l'enrichissement de l'environnement et le bien-être animal. Cette revue narrative rappelle les fondements biologiques de l’odorat canin, ainsi que ses implications comportementales et cognitives et ses enjeux pour le bien-être du chien de compagnie. Elle aboutit à un support de sensibilisation destiné aux propriétaires et aux praticiens vétérinaires, présentant des recommandations pratiques pour mieux prendre en compte les besoins olfactifs du chien de compagnie.

Olfaction is the dominant sense in the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). Its anatomical and physiological foundations support a sensitivity far greater than that of humans. This sense plays a key role in both intraspecific and interspecific communication and underlies various cognitive processes. However, its importance is often overlooked in the daily lives of companion dogs. Taking this sense into account represents an important means of environmental enrichment and the promotion of animal welfare. This narrative review outlines the biological foundations of canine olfaction, as well as its behavioural and cognitive implications and its relevance to the welfare of companion dogs. It culminates in the development of an awareness-raising resource intended for dog owners and veterinary practitioners, providing practical recommendations to better address the olfactory needs of companion dogs.
