Abstract

[en] Faced with the increasing standardisation of construction methods and contemporary environmental challenges, the relationship between architecture and territory is once again taking on particular importance. Reflections on the genius loci, the rediscovery of vernacular knowledge, and calls for a practice that is more attentive to context invite us to rethink the way architectural projects are conceived.

From this perspective, this research examines how the work of Alberto Ponis reflects an architectural practice based on the understanding and reinterpretation of the Sardinian genius loci, bringing together a relationship with the territory, vernacular knowledge, and contemporary requirements of construction.

The research is based on the analysis of six projects built by Ponis in Sardinia between 1963 and 1996, complemented by fieldwork carried out in September 2025 and by two comparative case studies: Dante Bini’s Cupola di Antonioni and Casa Li Baietti, a contemporary intervention that reinterprets certain principles found in Ponis’s work. This approach combines architectural analysis, observation of the territory, graphic documentation, testimonies, and theoretical reflections on place and the vernacular.

The analysis highlights three complementary transformations: the landscape progressively becomes the generator of the project; the Sardinian vernacular is reinterpreted through principles of dwelling rather than reproduced in its forms; and the design method evolves towards an open-ended approach based on observation, walking, drawing, and the construction process. Far from constituting a nostalgic retreat, this “return to the roots” invites us to reconsider the relationship between architecture and territory and to question the lessons this approach can still offer in response to contemporary issues of sobriety, adaptation, and contextualisation.
