Immigrants and Nationalists: Political Participation of Immigrants in the Contemporary Catalan Nationalist Movement

Abstract

La participation politique des immigrés dans leur pays d'accueil est un sujet qui a récemment été étudié en sciences sociales et politiques. Différentes approches à différents niveaux d'analyse ont permis de mieux cerner ce qui explique la participation politique des immigrés. Cependant, ces différentes approches restent isolées et ne permettent pas une approche intégrée de ce phénomène social. Ce mémoire se veut une tentative de réponse modeste à cette critique au travers de l'étude qualitative de la participation politique des immigrés au sein du mouvement nationaliste Catalan contemporain qui a été entreprise. En effet, c’est via approche mobilisant à la fois des concepts opérants au niveau macro-social (structure des opportunités politiques, voir Ireland 1994), au niveau méso-social (capital social, voir Fennema & Tillie, 1999, 2001), au niveau micro-social (genre, statut socio-économique, situation administrative, langue, sentiment d’appartenance et motivations, voir Verba, Scholzman & Brady, 1995) et à l’aide de certains pans des théories du transnationalisme (activités politiques transnationales, voir Lafleur, 2005) que la participation des immigrés au sein du mouvement nationaliste Catalan contemporain a été analysée. Les résultats de ce mémoire mettent en avant le besoin d’utiliser une approche intégrée pour comprendre la participation politique des immigrés : utiliser un niveau d’analyse au détriment d’un autre empêche la compréhension du phénomène social étudié. De plus, ce mémoire permet de cerner les particularités sociales liées au cadrage géographique d’une problématique : en se focalisant sur la Catalogne, ce travail souligne l’importance pour les étudiants et les chercheurs en sciences sociales et politiques de s’extraire du carcan de l’État-nation et d’aller plus loin dans l’étude des phénomènes sociaux, notamment par la prise en compte des spécificités locales. Enfin, les résultats obtenus confirment certaines pistes envisagées dans la littérature scientifique et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives en ce qui concerne l’utilisation de références tirées de l’histoire politique du pays d’origine et de la socialisation politique des immigrés dans leur pays d’origine pour juger d’une situation ou d’une cause dans le pays d’accueil.

Political participation of immigrants in host country is a topic that has been recently studied in political and social sciences. Different approaches operating at different analytical levels allow now to better understand what explains political participation of immigrants. Nevertheless, these different approaches remain isolated and do not allow using an integrated approach to analyze this social phenomenon. This Master’s Thesis represents a modest attempt to answer this critique through a qualitative study of the political participation of immigrants in the contemporary Catalan nationalist movement. Actually, it is through an approach which mobilizes both concepts operating at the macrolevel (political opportunity structure, see Ireland, 1994), at the mesolevel (social capital, see Fennema & Tillie 1999, 2001), at the microlevel (gender, socio-economic status, administrative situation, language, belongings, and motivations, see Verba, Scholzman & Brady, 1995) and certain elements coming from the framework of transnationalism (transnational political activities, see Lafleur, 2005) that political participation of immigrants in the contemporary Catalan nationalist movement was analyze. Findings of this master’s thesis bring to the fore the need of using an integrated approach to understand and to explain political participation of immigrants: using one level of analysis instead of another avoids fully understanding the social phenomenon studied. Moreover, this research allows looking at the role of local specificities linked to the geographic scope of a problematic: with a focus on Catalonia, this work underlines the need for students and researchers in social and political sciences to escape the nation-state point of view and to go further in the study of social phenomena, notably by taking in account the role of local specificities. Lastly, the findings obtained in this master’s thesis confirm some earlier findings presented in the recent scientific literature and open new lines of research related to the use by immigrants of home country reference framework (early political socialization and home country political history) to judge political situations in the host country.
