Abstract
[en] Separation anxiety is a behavioral disorder characterized by vocalizations, destructions and eliminations exhibited by the dog only when left alone. It is a frequent and under-diagnosed behavioral disorder, although asking a few questions to the owners is often enough to make the diagnosis. Over time, these unwanted behaviors can overwhelm the patience of owners and their neighbours and can lead to relinquishment or even euthanasia of the dog. Therefore, rapid diagnosis and effective treatment are essential.
Behavioral therapy is the core treatment of separation anxiety. The use of antidepressants in addition to the behavioral therapy is useful, on the one hand, to obtain a faster decrease of the unwanted behaviors and, on the other hand, to enable the dog to experience therapy better, by restoring a balanced and appeasing emotional state. Since the prescription of psychotropic drugs is restricted to veterinarians, it constitutes an opportunity to provide a more global care of the animal, compared to that which could be proposed by an educator or a non-veterinary behaviorist. Veterinarians must make sure to propose the most effective treatment possible because the stakes of successful treatment of separation anxiety are multiple : rebuild the canine-human bond, contributing to animal welfare and reducing the number of relinquished dogs.
