Abstract

[en] The business environment changed and there are now more budget, time and complexity constraints applied for industries. In order to adapt to new circumstances, project management is increasingly used. Indeed, a project is an innovation process with budget, time, quality and output requirements which can answer to the constraints applied for the industry to compete and to stay on the market.
But the rate of project failure is very high due to budget or time overspending, failure of goals achievement or project abandonment. The project leader seems to have a critical role to play in project success. So in this work we will try to understand his role and his impact on project management. We will study if there is a preferred profile of competencies and personality to perform the function of project leader.
First of all, we tried to define an efficient project management, which seems divided in three sides: Technical, organizational and social dimensions. Skills needed by the project leader to manage these three dimensions were defined.
Then, a survey of fifteen project leaders and four direct supervisors of them was realized. The first goal was to know the preferred project leader’s profile chosen by their line managers. The second goal was to compare to the real profiles met in this function.
