Résumé
[en] This paper analyses misinformation online and provides insights into the factors that are most likely to influence false information on digital platforms. Factors such algorithms, advertising income, information overload as well as echo chambers are discussed. The drastic evolution from the information age to the disinformation age raises therefore the question for a future regulation. The research of this paper is based on a content analysis of misinformation in the digital world as well as on the business model of digital platforms.
In the past, platforms have proposed to regulate themselves to combat misinformation online. But now, the European Commission released a proposal for an international regulation of digital platforms in order to create a more safer environment for users and businesses.
This paper provides insight in the fixed objectives of a future regulation as well as in the current discussions between governments and platforms for a regulation on an European level.
