Abstract
[en] Multiple clinical trials have indicated that cancer, rather than cardiovascular illnesses, was the leading cause of death in follow-up examinations of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) patients that underwent repair surgery. Also, inflammation, having a prominent role in AAA disease, has been proven to play an important role in cancer development. Therefore, a potential link could be made between AAA and cancer. We searched for micro-RNA (miRNA) candidate biomarker(s) in plasma of 15 AAA patients that developed cancer and 15 that did not. Hsa-miR-122-5p was found significantly upregulated in cancer patients compared to non-cancer patients. Further studies need to be done in order to confirm its role on bigger cohorts and to establish it as a possible therapeutic target.
