Abstract

[en] From January 2023, companies will be required to publish non-financial information under the new
CSRD directive. The previous directive did not facilitate the process of communicating these nonfinancial
results. Indeed, the directive did not include a framework to be applied, leaving companies
free to disclose information. The result was the publication of reports that were very different and
difficult to compare. The renewal of the Non-Financial Reporting Directive represents a major change
from the previous one. The CSRD aims to give companies the tools they need to communicate their
non-financial results to the public and stakeholders.
Among them, the ESRS (European Social Reporting Standard), adopted by the European Commission
(EC) on July 31, 2023, provides a framework and resources for the publication of non-financial
information that also introduces an essential new principle: the principle of double materiality.
Listed companies and large corporations are the main players affected by these new
regulations. Companies will have to comply with the new regulations over the next few years.
However, many companies are still not meeting expectations. According to my analysis and some of
the companies I interviewed, they are still facing challenges.
The aim of this thesis is to understand how companies implement the principle of double materiality,
which enables them to select the non-financial information to be published, on the one hand, by taking
stock of the elements.
