Abstract

The aim of this work was to study the influence of the choice of the economics course in the secondary school on the results of students enrolled in bachelor courses in economics. In addition, the influence of many other variables was studied, such as the relevance of gender, repeating a year in the secondary education, etc. A sample of 203 students was analysed. The results showed that choosing the economics option during secondary education improved their results in the first year, particularly in the accounting and general economics courses. Moreover, a smaller sample was analysed as part of a robustness test. 86 students responded to this second survey. This showed that the positive influence of choosing the economics course in the secondary school could not be confirmed in this second sample. In addition to the influence of the options, this research showed that having repeated a year in secondary education penalised students in higher education. In addition, the more students attended classes, the better their results were on average. Although the latter results could not be observed in all the analyses, they proved to be significant in most cases.
