Résumé
[en] This thesis aims at addressing the critical issue of student disengagement in secondary education and explore the potential impact of sports activities as a means to re-engage students in their academic pursuits. Recognizing the pivotal role of education in youth development and the broader societal implications, the study delves into methods to attract and motivate disengaged students.
Focusing on secondary education in the province of Liège, Belgium, the research examines both school-related and extracurricular factors influencing student engagement. Through qualitative data collection methods including interviews and questionnaires, the study seeks to understand the personal experiences and perceptions of students, complemented by quantitative data to enrich the analysis.
Specific attention is given to the integration of sports activities into the academic environment, considering its potential as a positive source of energy and motivation for students. The research compares the experiences of students balancing academics with high-level sports training to those in more traditional educational settings.
The theoretical framework encompasses an exploration of dropout phenomena, its underlying factors, and consequences, followed by an examination of the psychological impact of sports engagement. Empirical data collected from various schools, including perspectives from teachers, contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in addressing student disengagement.
The findings will be discussed, and recommendations for improvement will be proposed, with the aim of informing future research endeavors and practical interventions to combat school dropout rates.
This research holds significance not only for understanding the nexus between sports and academic engagement but also for advancing efforts to mitigate the societal implications of student disengagement.
