Abstract

[en] Streptococcus agalactiae, also called group B streptococcus (GBS), is a cocci gram positive bacteria commonly found in the intestinal flora as well as the vaginal flora of healthy adults. However, GBS is the leading cause of neonatal mortality in Belgium due to the transmission of this bacteria to neonates. A screening allowing to determine the colonization status of the pregnant woman is conducted at 35-37 weeks of gestation and antibiotic prophylaxis is administered if the result is positive. This project is part of the epidemiological surveillance of GBS circulating strains in pregnant women. Indeed, the goal is to update the information that are available regarding GBS characteristics in Belgium in view, notably, of the development of a vaccine against this bacteria.
