Abstract

[en] Our research focuses on the mediatization of climate change through the coverage of the 27th Conference of the Parties in the Belgian newspaper Le Soir. This sampling enables us to explore the journalistic treatment of global warming from one of its major angles: the international environmental policy, instituted by the United Nations. In a study that combines qualitative and quantitative methods, we investigate the many legal, sociological, scientific, economic, and political implications of the mediatization of climate change. The results of our research suggest a journalistic treatment that conforms to current political and economic logic. This Liberal assessment of the climate phenomenon also coincides with the trust placed in the United Nations' environmental system. In addition, our study shows how the media consolidates the established order, weakening democratic debate on the climate issue.
