Résumé
[en] Currently the university is involved with the design of a prototype hydro-foiling electric trimaran. A 9 metre long concept boat will be built and tested on the Solent within the next 12 months. A 1.5m scale model which has been fitted with a main fixed foil, and a rudder with a fitted foil. It is intended that the angle of attack on the main foil will be adjustable by adjusting the angle of attack on the rudder, thus creating either a bow down or bow up trimming moment. The EMSHIP project will involve structuring the foils for the 9 metre boat most likely in carbon fibre.
As the boat heels, the tips provide a righting moment, and there may be scope with the correct fibre orientation to enhance the righting moment by allowing the tip to flex.
Thus the project will involve an element of CFD and FEA to analyse various scenarios and to develop a solution which enhances performance of the foil. The flexing may also provide a way of unloading the main foil of excess lift which will thus reduce need for trimming the main foil with excessive rudder foil angles of attack.
