Abstract

[en] This master’s thesis investigates the concept of fair prices in the dairy sector, focusing on Belgium and France. Certain thematic aspects have served as a basis for this study, such as the current situation of the dairy sector in both regions, price justice in the food sector in general, and the influence of North-North fair trade. Various organisations have been involved in this study. Among them, associations, cooperatives, and institutions engaged in research and development, all linked directly to the dairy sector. The practices, structures, and ecosystems of these organisations offered a unique perspective on risks and opportunities related to fair prices in the dairy sector. This study, therefore, provides a practical view of mechanisms, practices, and frameworks that could be implemented to have a better distribution of the benefits within the value chain and allow for more justice for producers. Moreover, whenever fair prices are not reached, the study considers obstacles to the definition of fair prices. Finally, this study provides a great understanding of how fair pricing in the dairy sector can move from theory to practice and contributes to ongoing discussions about justice and equity, offering valuable recommendations for all stakeholders, practitioners, and even policymakers, in order to support and develop fairer prices for dairy producers.
