Abstract

[en] ThThis thesis investigates the relationship between international trade and poverty, inequality, and human development in Sub-Saharan Africa between 2000 and 2019. Using panel regressions with fixed effects and dynamic GMM models, it explores trade openness and the depth of trade agreements. The results do not provide robust evidence that trade is associated with reductions in poverty or inequality, though a weak positive correlation appears with income growth among the poorest quintile. For human development, small positive associations are observed, but government effectiveness consistently shows a stronger link. Overall, the findings suggest that trade alone is not systematically connected to inclusive development.
