Generative Artificial Intelligence and Film Production: A Media Educational Approach

Abstract

The aim of this work is to discuss the use of generative AI in film production, with a particular focus on scriptwriting. The first research question of this dissertation is: Can AI generate scripts without reproducing biases and stereotypes? To answer this question I will analyze three films whose scripts were generated by AI. The second research question deals with media education, and is therefore: Should media education tackle AI-generated films? This will be answered following a specific path: first analyzing how media education has previously addressed film and AI, then reflecting on the ways AI-generated films could be integrated in the field and how media educators should adapt the it to the changes posed by the use of GenAI in film production. Finally, I will discuss how media education can help in tackling the concern of potential AI bias in film.
