Abstract
[en] Villarrica and Mocho-Choshuenco stratovolcanoes, located in the Central Southern Volcanic Zone (CSVZ) of Chile are separated by only 57 km nevertheless they exhibit petrographic differences. Notably, amphibole has been identified in the most silicic eruptive products of Mocho-Choshuenco while being absent of Villarrica suggesting differences in the parent magmas. We constrained the distinct geochemical parameters of both stratovolcanoes through XRF and ICP-MS analysis on whole-rock samples and determined whether these characteristics where inherited from their parental magmas through observations of the “6 values”, a reference value of 6 wt.% MgO for major and trace elements minimising the effects of crustal processes. Moreover, we investigated the importance of differentiation processes, such as fractional crystallisation and mixing. Our results confirmed that fractional crystallisation dominates the magmatic evolution of both systems, while bulk magma mixing process is not supported by geochemical data. However, petrographic observations support the hypothesis that explosive eruptions at both stratovolcanoes may be triggered by local mixing during magma recharge. Higher La/Yb, Th/Yb and La/Sm ratios in Mocho-Choshuenco are probably the result of a generally greater input of the slab component, notably from the subducted basaltic oceanic crust for the Sr. The greater slab depth beneath Mocho-Choshuenco, being farther from the trench than Villarrica, induces both greater pressure and temperature at the slab surface, supported by the slightly lower Sr/Nd ratio in Mocho-Choshuenco. This difference could influence metamorphic reactions at the origine of a local enrichment in the mantle source of Ba, Sr, La and Th beneath it. The presence of amphibole appears to be induced by a higher water content of the parental magma of Mocho-Choshuenco inherited from a locally more hydrous mantle.
