Résumé
[en] This thesis investigates the impact of ESG performance on the capital structure of 236 European high-carbon firms over 2015–2023 (1,637 firm-year observations). Using two-way fixed effects panel regressions, three hypotheses are tested: a negative effect of overall ESG performance on leverage (H1), a negative effect of environmental performance (H2), and a positive effect of social and governance performance (H3). The central finding is that ESG performance does not exert a statistically significant effect on leverage across any specification. In contrast, profitability, firm size, tangibility, liquidity, and growth opportunities are all highly significant determinants of capital structure.
