Abstract

[en] This study examines the phenomenon of desertion in the Belgian and German armies through the trajectories of soldiers originating from the Eastern Cantons during the Second World War. As this phenomenon has not yet been studied from an individual perspective, the aim of this research is to identify the mechanisms that may emerge in two distinct contexts: that of German-speaking soldiers from the Eastern Cantons who served in the Belgian army before 10 May 1940, and that of men from the same regions who were conscripted into the Wehrmacht following the annexation of the territory to the German Reich. The study will address the timing of desertions, their motivations, the practical circumstances in which they occurred, the influences that may have played a role in the decision to desert, as well as the forms of engagement and integration of these men within Belgian and German society. The research draws on sources from post-war military courts in the context of trials relating to collaboration, as well as on files compiled during procedures for the official recognition of the statuses of forcibly conscripted and resistance fighter against Nazism from 1974 onwards. While certain patterns appear to emerge, particularly with regard to the practices surrounding desertion, the diversity and individuality of the trajectories examined argue against the notion of a “typical” deserter, both in the case of the Belgian army and that of the German army.
