Abstract
[en] Wetlands have lost 35% of their global area since 1970, at a rate three times faster than that of forests; Lake Alaotra (Madagascar), Ramsar Site 1312, and the country’s leading rice-growing basin illustrate this crisis at the critical interface between fishing and rice cultivation. This study aims to (i) characterize landscape dynamics from 2005 to 2025 using remote sensing, (ii) simulate three prospective scenarios through 2045, and (iii) identify critical areas of socio-ecological vulnerability across the 1,679,958-hectare watershed. Landsat 5/7/8 images were processed in Google Earth Engine using NDVI, MNDWI, and NDBI indices, then classified using Random Forest (250 trees, 7 classes). A CA-Markov model incorporating slope and Euclidean distances to watercourses, roads, and settlements projects the three scenarios to 2045: Business as Usual (BAU), Agricultural Intensification (SIA), and Conservation (SCE). The classification achieves an overall accuracy of 95.70% (κ = 0.95). Between 2005 and 2025, habitats doubled (+70,682 ha; +100.8%), and rice cultivation expanded (+25,000 ha), at the expense of savannas (−132,685 ha) and gallery forests (−119,621 ha). The year 2015 marks a turning point with the partial recovery of wetlands (+24,167 ha). The 2045 projections show a stark contrast: under the SIA scenario, marshes collapse to 4.81% (κ = 0.91), while the SCE scenario maintains them at 7.68% (κ = 0.83). The study formalizes an expansion paradox in which rice cultivation cannibalizes its own ecological infrastructure. Recommendations include strict buffer zoning for wetlands, vertical intensification on tanety, and participatory co-management of spawning grounds.
