Abstract

[fr] Introduction: Relationship-based professions, particularly in the healthcare sector, involve intense emotional commitment and considerable stress, which can lead to burnout. This syndrome is particularly prevalent and concerning among psychiatric caregivers, impacting their well-being and the quality of care they provide. While the issue is recognized, there are still gaps in our understanding of the specific factors that influence it in the Belgian hospital context. This study therefore aims to explore the associations between burnout and psychosocial risks in this population.
Materials and methods: This quantitative, descriptive, and analytical study was conducted at the Louis Hillier, Agora, and Petit-Bourgogne sites of the Intercommunale des soins spécialisés de Liège (Liège Intermunicipal Specialized Care Center) using questionnaires sent to caregivers. The three questionnaires, which covered sociodemographic data, the type of burnout, and psychosocial factors, were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics.
Results: The results highlighted a link between low perceived social support and an increased likelihood of being vigilant about personal exhaustion. Analysis of seniority revealed that professionals early in their careers are at increased risk of relational exhaustion, while more experienced professionals show high vigilance but a low likelihood of reaching a state of alertness, suggesting coping mechanisms.
Conclusion: This study highlights the crucial role of social support in preventing burnout among mental health caregivers and calls for targeted interventions based on seniority. They also call for a nuanced approach to psychosocial risks, recognizing the multifactorial complexity of caregiver burnout.
